The Ionian Islands (Ιόνια νησιά) are a group of islands located on the northwest coast of Greece in the Ionian Sea. They were traditionally called the Seven Islands, but the group also includes many smaller islands. The main seven are, listed from north to south:
- Kerkyra, Corfu in English (Κέρκυρα)
- Paxi, Paxos in English (Παξοί)
- Lefkada, Lefkas in English (Λευκάδα)
- Ithaki, Ithaca in English (Ιθάκη)
- Kefallonia, Kefalonia/Cephalonia in English (Κεφαλλονιά)
- Zakynthos, Zante in English (Ζάκυνθος)
- Kythira, Cerigo in English (Κύθηρα)
The islands themselves are known by a variety of names. Over the centuries they acquired Italian names, by which some of them are still known in English.
Corfu is the furthest from the other islands and is the most well known, it is a very popular destination with holiday companies and has its own international airport. This group of islands make an ideal sailing holiday, the seas are relativley calm and travel between the islands ensures some good sailing time.
